I began a new project this week with Andy Pollock. It is an EDM group we are referring to as Mutt & Geoff. Having watched a significant portion of the Master Class from Armin Van Buuren and his partner, which broke down the creation of a Trance song from scratch, I began further researching and experimenting with EDM genres, particularly Trance, Techno and Deep House/Chill. I came to realize that while I have avoided writing music in this genre, primarily because of my perceived narrowness of the beat structure and repetitiveness of the melodic structure, my music origins and interests have always skirted the boundaries. Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of my favorite composers, and I have always been a fan of Kraftwerk, but somehow I separated them from the genres they essentially foreshadowed.
Regardless, I am enjoying this pursuit and Andy is equally intrigued. We will still emphasis guitars, both bass and six string versions in the compositions. I don’t expect them to be straight forward EDM, although that seems to be standard for this broad music genre.
